Anti-Aging: The Facts & The Fiction

Anti-aging products come in different variants. One cosmetics company is talking about Q10, the other about hyaluronic acid and another about skin-tightening peptides. From what age should you use anti-aging products? Read it here!

Preventing skin aging (anti-aging) actually starts from birth. However, skin aging cannot be prevented, the skin just grows with us and the condition will deteriorate anyway. But with the right skincare, this skin aging can be delayed. This is possible with various active substances, which have different effects. As a result, there is actually no direct answer to the question: “At what age should you use anti-aging products?”, Because one anti-aging ingredient is not the other anti-aging ingredient. I would like to explain to you in which age phase, in which products are effective to keep the skin in optimum condition.

12 – 25 years

Skincare can be started from the age of about 12 years. During puberty, we often see that sebum production increases, the skin structure changes and the skin becomes sensitive to pimples. Between the ages of 12 and 25 it is good to use mild, airy products with, for example, salicylic acid, niacinamide, antioxidants, and hyaluronic acid. Salicylic acid works well against pimples, because it regulates sebum production, thins the horny layer and acts as an antibacterial on the inflammation. Niacinamide is vitamin B3 and is a true skin repairer. This is very suitable when scars are left behind after pimples and it also prevents scaling. Hyaluronic acid is a multi-use drug that can use any age and any skin type. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the skin. Hyaluronic acid binds moisture and ensures that moisture remains in the skin. It is always good to prevent moisture deficiency in the skin, by using hyaluronic acid in skincare in advance.

25 – 40 years

Heredity, lifestyle, and environmental factors determine the phase in which the epidermis and dermis begin to become thinner, but cell activity decreases around the age of 25. The fibroblasts produce less collagen and elastin: two proteins that provide the connective tissue of the skin with firmness and resilience. In addition, the skin will have more and more difficulty retaining moisture, which can lead to dry lines. Between the ages of 25 and 35, it is time to continue using hyaluronic acid products and to start with, for example, glycolic acid or retinol (vitamin A acid). Glycolic acid and Retinol stimulate cell renewal, keeping the skin active. This results in a stimulation of collagen and elastin production, where the skin naturally inhibits production. Glycolic acid is a daily serum or in a weekly peel. Retinol is broken down by daylight and can therefore be used as a night product. In addition to hyaluronic acid, retinol, and glycolic acid, vitamin C (at least 10%) is also recommended. Vitamin C in skincare serves as a strong antioxidant and prevents glycation and oxidation in the skin by free radicals. These are processes that affect the connective tissue and cause skin sagging and wrinkles. In addition, vitamin C brightens the complexion and prevents pigmentation.

40 – 65 years old

In this phase, it is important to fill in deficiencies in the collagen and elastin levels, by means of active peptides. Science shows that peptides have a positive effect in reducing skin aging and in addressing problems such as wrinkles, skin sagging, and pigmentation problems. The most effective peptides are made through biotechnology. These remain the most stable and can penetrate the skin where they stimulate the cells. Active peptides are, for example: argireline, peptide-4, palmitoyl tripeptide-5, and palmitoyl tripeptide-38.

The Key to anti-aging

We have now discussed a number of attractive materials. But scientific research has shown that lubricating a sun factor is the best anti-aging agent that you can use. About 93% of the symptoms of premature skin aging are caused by UV radiation. The UV radiation can damage the skin cells at a young age (baby / child / teenager) and sun damage is often only visible after a few years when the damage has been made long and wide. The advice is, therefore, in addition to all these beautiful ingredients, to end the daycare day in day out with cream with at least SPF30.
